Shirley MacLaine and Sarah Green to Enter Texas Film Hall of Fame

Dust off your party duds. The 2017 Texas Film Awards are coming up on March 9, and the Austin Film Society has just announced the full lineup of honorees. Add actress Shirley MacLaine and producer Sarah Green to the previously announced honorees: filmmakers Jeff Nichols and Hector Galán, and actor Tye Sheridan.

Shirley MacLaine will be awarded the Texas Film Hall of Fame’s Lifetime Achievement Award and will also be on hand to accept the Star of Texas Award for the Lone Star classic Terms of Endearment, for which she won an Academy Award in 1983. MacLaine also starred in AFS Artistic Director Richard Linklater’s 2011 film Bernie. “Shirley MacLaine is one of the world’s most important living actors,” says Linklater. “It’s incredible to think that she’s given groundbreaking performances in seven different decades. Her embodiment of Larry McMurtry’s Aurora Greenway in both Terms of Endearment and The Evening Star introduced the world to a fearless and determined Texas woman, a character with a spirit of independence and self-reliance that resonated richly with Texans. She has left her mark on our regional cinema, and we’re honored to celebrate this legacy at the Texas Film Awards.”

Sarah Green’s celebrated Texas films include Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life and Song to Song, which will make its world premiere as the Opening Night film at SXSW on March 10. Green has also served as the producer of several other Malick films, as well as John Sayles’ Passion Fish and The Secret of Roan Inish, and Jeff Nichols’ Take Shelter and Loving. Nichols is also one of the TFHOF’s 2017 honorees. AFS CEO Rebecca Campbell observes that “Green’s work with Texas-based directors has fundamentally altered the Texas film landscape. The films she’s made here with Jeff Nichols and Terrence Malick are artistically ambitious and critically celebrated on the world’s stage. … In the eyes of AFS, her impact will build for generations thanks to her mentoring of dozens of emerging filmmakers who are becoming forces in the industry in their own right.”
