Kickstart Your Weekend: 'Nasty'

Been good and saved up your crowdfunding cash all week? Well, then it's the perfect time to get nasty. And we mean "Nasty: A Short Film."

Austin director Mathew S. Marron describes "Nasty" as "glitter, glamour and horror." The titular Nasty is a serial killer in heels, played by local drag queen Cupcake. In fact, all the cast and crew are local, meaning this will be a blood-drenched display of Austin's thriving and grinding drag scene (the Chronicle's Gay Place previously wrote about the project here). And, yes, Marron is promising "GOREgeous" practical special effects.

The early teaser footage has a John Waters meets August Underground vibe, and that's great news for both Austin's drag community and its horror hounds. This town is oozing with practical effects experts (the ladies of Hawgfly, brothers of destruction Matt Valentine and Michael Faust of Global Fear Inc., their fellow House of Torment alumnus Miguel Coronado III, and Faust's fellow competitor from SyFy's Face Off, Eric Zapata) but there's been a dearth of projects for them to sink their fangs into. And you know what we say around here: More gore!

As is suitable for a glitteringly different kind of project, Marron also has lined up some wonderfully innovative incentives. After all, every film can offer you a producer credit: But where else can you have local drag legend Nadine Hughes, in character as Rita Reelhard, send you a personal (and deliciously impolite) thank you video?
