It's not all sugar and spice and everything nice, you know.
Some stories for young girls don't get their happily ever afters, or they at least put up a considerable fight first. Meet two.
Based on the first of the eponymous trilogy by young adult author Veronica Roth, Divergent tells the story of a girl (played by Shailene Woodley) who faces great danger when her societally mandated aptitude test comes back "inconclusive." Readers of the books know how things eventually end – the final novel, Allegiant, came out last month, but like the Hunger Games series before it, we suspect readers and new viewers alike will flock to theatres when this one hits in March.
Maleficent
Name sound familiar? It should. In this May release from Disney, the villainess of Sleeping Beauty gets a chance to tell her side of the story. It's not the first time the formula's been flipped (Wicked, anyone?), but Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning are sure to put on a show to remember.
