Alamo Going Ape for Lakeline Opening

One era ends as another begins at the Alamo Drafthouse. On July 21, the Alamo Lake Creek will dim the lights for the last time: The next day, the new Alamo Lakeline will open up, with a week of special screenings including a special showing of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's newest, The World's End.

The new, purpose built 10 screen location at Lakeline Market Shopping Center (14028 North 183) will host a week of special programming to celebrate its grand opening. And since the Drafthouse is now giving each of its locations a sci-fi theme (UFOs at South Lamar, carnivorous plants at Slaughter) there will be a special dress-up screening of the original Wahlberg-free Planet of the Apes to compliment the mighty ape experience of the Lakeline lobby.

The celebratory programming starts July 23 with a special screening of Korean monster classic The Host, followed by Sundance award winner The Spectacular Now. But the big party comes July 27 when Wright, Frost and Pegg unveil the entirety of their "blood and ice-cream" trilogy: revisionist zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead, subversive action fave Hot Fuzz, and the eagerly awaited apocalyptic pub crawl The World's End.

Still, it will be a sad farewell for many in North Austin who Lake Creek was the third Drafthouse, after the now shuttered original Colorado Street location and Alamo Village. In 2004, it separated from the core Drafthouse brand, but was re-absorbed into the mothership in 2010. Over its decade-long run, it built its own loyal fan base and unique programming, including regular showings of Troma classics. In a nod to the closure of an iconic site, Alamo CEO Tim League said, "I built the original Lake Creek Alamo with my own two hands. I am excited that more skilled craftsmen than myself have replaced it with a brand new state-of-the-art cinema for the neighborhood."
