Sunday! F.W. Murnau's 'Sunrise' with Live Score by My Education

By Marc Savlov, September 8, 2012, 7:23pm, Picture in Picture

If you've never seen Murnau's 1927 cri de coeur, then you ain't seen nothing yet, human. (Except maybe Nosferatu.) The Oscar-winning silent film will be screened at the Alamo S. Lamar, with epic rockers My Education providing the live score, at 4 and 7pm, Sunday, Sept. 9. That's tomorrow! Trust us: you won't regret it.

My Education has already sold out two Alamo Ritz Sunrise shows and one at the S. Lamar, which says something of the powerfully emotional sounds they bring to an already devastating silent classic.

And Murnau's glorious black and white tale of forbidden love is fifty shades of grey all the way; it's portrait of humanity is at once bleak, joyous, doomed, and redemptive. We've seen all the local performances to date, and believe it or not, there wasn't a dry eye in the house at any of them. It's that transcendental.

My Education (and ST-37) member Scott Telles had this to say about both the live score and the film earlier today:

"The whole idea came about shortly after ST-37 had done Metropolis, which was [one of] the first Alamo screenings with a live score. A friend of mine from Norway asked me if I'd ever seen Sunrise, and when I said no, he told me 'If you ever want to score another silent film, that's the one you have to do. The film was awarded the very first Oscar for Artistic Achievement, which has never been awarded again!

"If I may be so bold to say, I think our score really does the film justice. Several times I've received the highest compliment when people have come up to me after the screening and told me that the experience brought them to tears."

We can attest to that, totally. My Education's score is a matchless sonic ode to a peerless silent movie. Highly recommended, and then some.
