'Red Dawn' Reboot to Close Fantastic Fest

Seven months after SXSW premiered a long-shelved Chris Hemsworth picture to great acclaim, Fantastic Fest is dusting off another Hemsworth film with a problematic backstory, FilmDistrict's Red Dawn.

A remake of John Milius' bombastically silly but still very fondly recalled 1984 Cold War actioner, the reboot follows a group of high school toughs who single-handedly launch a resistance after North Korea invades their hometown. It was shot in 2009 and moved around the release slate; it's currently slated for a Thanksgiving Day release. (Originally, China played the invading army; part of the film's holdup was a post-production tinkering to digitally switch the baddie from China – a major overseas market – to North Korea.)

The world premiere of Red Dawn will close out Fantastic Fest, followed by a typically kickass party, wherein the American Legion morphs into a "maximum-security prison":

"Prisoners will experience mandatory enjoyment from delousing stations as well as free prison tattoos and head-shaves. Executive chef John Bullington will be doling out wild-game bulgogi, kimchi and piping-hot shots of deer blood while the uniformed detainees enjoy the musical stylings of festival favorite Future Folk."

Fantastic Fest 2012 runs Sept. 20-27.
