A Closer Look at the Paramount Lineup

Spike Lee, Amy Heckerling to present films

'Summer of Sam'
'Summer of Sam'

May we direct your attention to the newly released slate for the Paramount's annual Summer Classic Film Series? The print's so tiny you might have glossed over two big names: Amy Heckerling and Spike Lee.

Both filmmakers will be in attendance at the Paramount for screenings of their films. Kat Candler's UT group Women in Cinema is flying in writer/director Amy Heckerling for a June 9 showing of Clueless, followed by a Q&A. A female pioneer in feature comedies, Heckerling also directed Fast Times at Ridgemont High (which screens in July) and the first two films in the Look Who's Talking franchise.

Then, at the tail-end of the series, Spike Lee will present Summer of Sam, his 1999 film about the summer of 1977 that led up to the arrest of serial killer David Berkowitz, aka Son of Sam. Lee will follow the film with a conversation about his career.

Other highlights of the series – which was programmed by Jesse Trussell, now in his second year at the Paramount and pretty much knocking it out of the park – include the Austin premiere of Fassbinder's 1973 sci-fi film World on a Wire; Iron & Wine's Sam Beam introducing The Third Man (just about as near to perfect a film ever made, doncha think?); a week devoted to women filmmakers from Ida Lupino to Claire Denis; all three versions of A Star Is Born, screening on back-to-back nights; and the opening weekend's vault-raiding of Universal Pictures, which is celebrating its centennial this year.

The series will also utilize the newly restored Stateside Theatre next door for select screenings. See below for the whole lineup, followed by a little something to whet the appetite.
