Trailer Hitch, 3/10

By Kimberley Jones, March 10, 2012, 10:34am, Picture in Picture

Alright, kids. Time to get our art on.

The fantastical work of the wildly talented Wayne White has already seen screen time – he was Emmy awarded for his set and puppet design on Pee Wee’s Playhouse, and his art direction on the videos for Peter Gabriel’s 'Big Time and the Smashing Pumpkins’ 'Tonight, Tonight' were music video game changers. Neil Berkeley’s documentary profile Beauty Is Embarrassing moves White from supporting player to leading man. White will also appear Sunday (3/11), 7-10pm, at Domy Books (913 E. Cesar Chavez) in support of his book Maybe Now I'll Get the Respect I So Richly Deserve. (Screens Saturday, 7pm, Vimeo)

Gregory Crewdson is a photographer who stages his shots like they were a movie set, to eerie and gorgeous effect. Filmmaker Ben Shapiro documented the process in Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters; you can read our interview with Shapiro here. (Screens Saturday, 9:30pm, Alamo Lamar)

Adam Leon’s Narrative Feature Competition film Gimme the Loot, which travels from here to screen as part of the 2012 New Directors/New Films lineup, is about a couple of young street artists with a grand plan to tag a legendary New York – and professional sports – landmark. (Screens Saturday, 8pm, Stateside)
