From the Vaults: Ti West Revives the American Horror Film

By Marjorie Baumgarten, February 3, 2012, 3:42pm, Picture in Picture

"Horror's my favorite genre, but it's just ruined right now. It's been fucked up so bad by becoming so profitable," said filmmaker Ti West in a 2007 Chronicle interview about his film Trigger Man. Reviewing West's newest film The Innkeepers, Marc Savlov writes:

West has "almost single-handedly revitalized the moribund American indie horror genre."

The Innkeepers made its world premiere at SXSW Film 2011, and West has had a longtime relationship with the festival, which also presented his previous films, Trigger Man and The Roost. West's House of the Devil made a splash in 2009 at local Fantastic Fest, which also showcased the filmmaker's work in a retrospective last year. West is also one of the directors slated to helm a segment of The ABCs of Death, the omnibus horror film being produced by Drafthouse Films.
