Scroobius Depp Kills People

By Marc Savlov, December 27, 2011, 6:47pm, Picture in Picture

So over the holidays we spent some precious nap time hard, long hours catching up on our UK film, hip hop and related ephemera, as is the tradition in our decidedly Anglophile household, and we came across this rather brilliant music video from SXSW Music alum Scroobius Pip, for his track "The Struggle" off his recent Distraction Pieces CD.

Notable to the cinematically inclined, the video not only references the aforementioned Mr. Depp but also seems to have been influenced, slightly, to our minds at least, by the stylistic work of Fantastic Fest favorite Ben Wheatley, whose 2010 entry Kill List appears to have vibed its way into Pip's (or director Aaron Shrimpton's) subconscious.

Then again, it could just be fun to have torches, creepy, skeleton-faced extras, and blood in your music video. Whatevs. It's a brilliant slice of current semi-underground Brithop with a clever twist that we've already ruined for you that you'll never see coming. Cheers and kudos to Pip for smartly transposing what at first appears to be the jaded, cynical life of a hopstar onto that of a monster, and from there to a film star. Word.
