Godzilla Saves Japan
Second night of rubber monster double bills tonight
By Richard Whittaker, 1:00PM, Mon. Jun. 20, 2011
Godzilla may have started his film career wrecking Japan, but tonight he will be helping rebuild it at Godzilla Fest 2011, a double-bill of rubber monster action for Japan Aid at the Blue Starlite Drive-In.
This is part two of Godzilla Fest, as last Monday it was the original US release (complete with a baffled-looking Raymond Burr) of Godzilla, King of The Monsters tag-teaming with the mega-monster-meltdown Destroy All Monsters. So what will be adding those distinctive lizard shrieks to the balmy June air tonight?
First up at 9pm is the big green guy's classic 1964 throw-down with another Japanese ultra-mega-heavyweight in Mothra Versus Godzilla. Who will win when heat ray is challenged by the binding power of silk? Plus, what is up with the tiny women?
Japan's unlikely protector returns to his roots as an environmental warning with Godzilla Versus Hedorah aka Godzilla Versus the Smog Monster. The 11th outing for ol' Gojira, and one of the whackiest, kicks off at 11pm.
Aside from a perfect opportunity to get out into the unseasonably balmy June nights, there will be a special fund-raising print by rising Kiaju (that's "big rubber monster suits" to you, gaijin) artist Matt Frank, plus authentic Japanese food and drink for sale. On top of that, 50% of all proceeds go towards Japan reconstruction. Slots for cars go pretty fast, so get there early, but there is also plenty of space for pedestrians (bring an FM radio to get the best sound and that real drive-in experience.)
