Duncan Jones, who screened his spooky and sublime Moon at SXSW '09, will kick off SXSW '11 with his new sci-fi actioner Source Code.
In recent years, SXSW Film has tilted toward comedies on opening night – MacGruber, I Love You, Man – but there doesn't appear to be anything funny about Source Code, a thriller about a military op that involves soldier Jake Gyllenhaal reliving in a loop the last eight minutes of another man's life before a terrorist bomb took out the train he was riding. (At least we think that's what it's about. Thinking caps may be required.) Source Code also stars the can-do-no-wrong two-punch of Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright.
SXSW also announced that Catherine Hardwicke, director of Twilight and the upcoming Amanda Seyfried-starring Red Riding Hood, will conduct a directing workshop at the SXSW '11 Film Conference.
The festival runs March 11-18; full lineup will be announced in early February.
