It's a 'Community' Christmas

Holiday episode of 'Community' done in stop-motion animation.

It's a 'Community' Christmas

Next week's episode of Community (NBC) should be a real treat. Besides being a holiday episode, this one features stop-motion animation, like what you see in "Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer."

At the center of next Thursday's episode is everyone's favorite geek, Abed (Danny Pudi). When the pop culture fan and budding filmmaker wakes up in a stop-motion world, he takes it as a sign that he is to discover the true meaning of Christmas. Naturally, the gang thinks he's really gone off his nut this time, and they try to get him back to "normal." In the meantime, they share their visions of Christmas and learn about each other in the process.

I was a latecomer to Community. The pilot just didn't nab me, but when I revisited, and followed it through several of its high point episodes (the bottle episode, the zombie episode, the pool game episode) I've come to realize that this is one of the brightest, most off-beat series on broadcast TV. Maybe it was a late bloomer, maybe I was. Either way, tonight's episode promises to be a another high point in an already high flying series.

The stop-motion animated episode of Community airs next Thursday (Dec. 9) at 7pm on NBC. Tonight's ep, "Mixology Certification," is also new.
