Terrence Malick's fifth film comes out May 27, 2011

'Tree of Life' to Premiere This Spring

After two years of rumor and speculation, cinema's Bigfoot equivalent finally gets a release date.

Fox Searchlight will begin a limited release of Terrence Malick's hugely anticipated Tree of Life on May 27, 2011.

Malick, who lives roundabout these regions (although sightings of him are as infrequent as details about his film are fuzzy), filmed the period piece Tree of Life in Smithville in 2008. It stars Sean Penn and Brad Pitt, and we've heard rumors of dinosaurs being involved, too (CG, presumably). Beyond that, not much is known, but I suspect the Internet will fill the seven-month void with conspiracy theories aplenty.

Might I suggest a more constructive way to channel your Malick enthusiasm? Check out the Criterion Collection's newish DVD/Bluray release of his 1998 opus The Thin Red Line. It was the first disc I popped in to celebrate the purchase of my first-ever flat-screen, and I swear I almost wept at how pretty the film looked. Just don't expect to hear from the famously elusive auteur – he didn't contribute to the double disc – but at the risk of sounding trite, the movie pretty much speaks for itself.
