This Week's Waste of Time

By James Renovitch, May 13, 2010, 5:17pm, Picture in Picture

In celebration of the almost tear-jerking new trailer to the LittleBigPlanet sequel we present a selection of platform games for your running and jumping pleasure, all free and all ready to play on your browser. It's still cool for men to cry, right? While I dry my eyes, why don't you go ahead and click through.

Anyone who's read this column before knows that I'm a sucker for profanity-inducing platform games. Lord knows I've written about them before. But since I've been neglecting my rabid fan base (with surprisingly no letters asking for my return) I figured I'd make up for it with an omnibus platformer blog.

You might want to tackle these two last, because Give Up, Robot and Quietus are the kind of game that after a few levels ramps up the difficulty to a place that rattle even the most patient soul. Less than precise jumping and timing leads to much (oh so much) dying. The crew at Adult Swim present Give Up, Robot, which is kind of a surprise being that they have previously relied more on humor than playability in its games. The popular Five Minutes to Kill Yourself and Robot Unicorn Attack are testament to that. Both games are bitches, plain and simple.

The controls may be a bit sloppy but Vox Populi Vox Dei: A Werewolf Thriller at least has 8-bit robots disemboweling humanoid wolves. That's good enough for me.

Some might argue that Finwick is a puzzle game, but if there are platforms being jumped on, it's a platformer in my mind. Finwick looks more professional with decent writing and art design, but ff you want to play past level 26 you'll have to pay. That's something I rarely recommend with all the free games out there and don't recommend it here.

Relying on the cute factor, William and Sly puts you in control of a fox that must avoid baddies. The open-world levels are a nice change of pace from the single-frame format of the other games, but cuteness only takes you so far. You should be done with the game by the time the charm wears off.

Enjoy.
