Sundance Report: Amy Grappell Honored

By Marjorie Baumgarten, January 27, 2010, 2:21pm, Picture in Picture

The Sundance Jury prizes for short films were announced on Tuesday at a special ceremony where Austin filmmaker Amy Grappell received an honorable mention based on outstanding achievement and merit for her short "Quadrangle."

Grappell's film takes an unconventional look at two "conventional" couples that swapped partners and lived in a group marriage in the early 1970s, hoping to pioneer an alternative to divorce and the way people would live in the future. "Quadrangle" premiered in Austin this summer in a video installation at Arthouse and you can read more about that here. Grappell’s previous credits include the feature-length documentary Light From the East, which premiered at the 2005 South by Southwest Film Festival. Sundance's 2010 Short Film jurors include Sterlin Harjo (director, screenwriter, Four Sheets to the Wind), Brent Hoff (editor and cofounder, Wholphin DVD), and Christine Vachon (producer, Poison, Boys Don't Cry, Hedwig and the Angry Inch).
