It’s been a long day and you’ve been daydreaming about an escape route, perhaps traversing time and space in a blue British police box headed to “a galaxy far, far away”…
Instead, you’re stuck on I-35 in your lackluster sedan, while a limited edition Mortal Kombat bobblehead of Shao Kahn bobbles menacingly on your dashboard. That dreaded hour-and-a-half commute leaves you feeling like you just went three rounds with the League of Assassins. You get home and feed your dog, Chewie, before checking the Manga calendar on the wall. That’s right, geek, HavenCon launches this weekend.
HavenCon is Texas' first all-inclusive LGBTQIA convention that connects fan fiction writers, artists and, of course, fans – uniting different folks with different strokes for the prosperity of geeks everywhere. The first annual HavenCon kicks off Saturday, April 4, at Holiday Inn Midtown and promises dozens of guest panelists, including P.J. Byrne and Janet Varney of the Legend of Korra, a glimpse into “The Whedonverse” with Dr. Rebecca Housel, a Q&A with furry friend Sable Gryphon, a Big Gay Cosplay Wedding for all who want to participate, and much more.
"May the odds be ever in your favor," as tributes, we mean, participants, will have a chance to win prizes beginning Saturday morning at the silent auction benefiting Austin's own OutYouth, and again at the Geekster Egg Hunt on Sunday.
Reiterating that HavenCon is a "judge-free zone," coordinator and concept developer Shane Brown encourages allies and industry contributors alike to come out and get involved. Admission is $25 at the door for a single day pass and $47 for the whole weekend. So grab your scepters, wands, sabers, staffs, or tails, and join the fun this weekend at the Holiday Inn Midtown. For more details (and to inspire you to get that furry onesie out from the dry cleaner) check Havencontx.com now. Make it so, mofo.
