Mo' Music Monday: February 9

By Rob Cohen, February 9, 2015, 1:30pm, Qmmunity

Remember rock music? Yeah, they still make the stuff. Let's peek in on what's new these days.

"To Die in LA" Lower Dens

This shimmery new single is a sweet sigh of a song. Jana Hunter guides you through the cool breeze of shiny guitars over the light, kinetic pulse of California.

"Silhouettes" Viet Cong

From the ashes of Women – an awesome angular rock band who's founding member Chris Reimer passed away in 2012 – comes this new group. They, too, find a hypnotic way of getting tangled up in thick webs of guitar strings and dreary atmosphere. Get caught in their dense, dank, dreamy debut out now.

"Lampshades on Fire" Modest Mouse

After quite the wait, Issac Brock and company are back. Their classic, twitchy Nineties sound and their late career pop sensibility meld into this scrappy, instant greatest hit.

"Empyrean Abattoir" Of Montreal

Though it often feels like their glory days have long since past, crazy queer Kevin Barnes keeps cramming his tunes through the glory hole. This taste of their upcoming new albumAureate Gloom is a simple, pop rock nibble.

"Breeders" Desperate Living

They are here, queer, local, loud, and proud. Check 'em out live if you have the chance.

Finally, to all fellow Sonic Youth fags, the one and only Kim Gordon is paying Bookpeople a visit to discuss her new memoir Girl in a Band. The discussion is free, but if you want to rub elbows with my friend Goo, it'll cost you. Get tickets here.
