Mo' Music SXSoGay Afterglow: Tuesday

By Rob Cohen, March 12, 2014, 1:00pm, Qmmunity

Your faithful Mo' Music author and his amazing photographer buddy Ryan Obermeyer set out to do SXSW our way. Check us out every day this week for a recap of the night before.

The night started off at the sparsely populated Chain Drive. A couple free drinks from local queer-friendly vodka brand Frot and within a few hours, the place packed up to take a sip from Big Dipper. We stole the upstart Chicago rapper from the crowd briefly before his show for a quickie… interview in the bathroom.

We bounced out of that ladies restroom and into the crowd to watch him do his thang. Right off the butt… I mean bat, he got us giggling and twerking to his witty, hi-NRG hip-hop.

After plentiful rump-shaking and laughs, it was off to see what else the SXSWorld had in store.

A hop, skip, and a shove through the crowd, and we were checking out the cloudy indie rock of She Sir. Their shoegaze was thick with texture, rhythm, and gorgeous female harmonies. They are certainly a band to watch. Pick up their new LP, Go Guitars.

Finally, we finagled our way into Stubbs to check out hot rapper Pusha T. We got a little secondhand high, so we thought, why not put our hands up like the rest of the wild crowd? With a fierce vitality, he stalked the stage like a tiger while spitting his ill rhymes. I didn't know much about him before, but I will be checking out his music further.

And with that, night one of SXSoGay was over. Stay tuned, and keep checking The Gay Place for more.

Big Dipper plays Saturday, 10:30pm for the Y'all or Nothing queer-ass showcase at Cheer Up Charlie's
