Music Mo'nday: April 16

By Rob Cohen, April 16, 2012, 9:21am, Qmmunity

Time for your weekly music hot flash. Kazaam!

Side note: Screw you, YouTube, Vevo, and Vimeo for making it so annoying to make all the videos the same size.

"Blood for Poppies" - Garbage

Garbage: the most "alternative" band I could find back at the tender age of 15. I somehow convinced my mother to send me alone from Brownsville to their show in Nacogdoches. They we're on a campus tour with shit, I mean, Lit, and it was only 20 bux. Picture a young, queer twink in a Garbage T-shirt walking out of the Houston bus stop round 4am with a big bag of chips. If I remember correctly I wound up giving some guy $10 just to leave me alone. I weaseled my way up front and center, next to a crass, non-fan jock couple, getting bouncer boobs mashed in my face during Lit. It was oh so worth it though, to finally be in front of my goddess Shirley Manson. I could swear she was singing to me, her red armpit hair glistening as she gyrated. It was fucking awesome.

I grow out of bands a lot (no one over 23 should have Death Cab on), but I always like to check back in. I'm sorry to say that they found a way to make an even lamer song than "Why Do You Love Me." This wretched, rusty clunker of a comeback single sounds like Limp Bizkit took a wah-wah caca in my ears and shows no sign of progress from the group. I am not ready to give up on them just yet, though. The new album better be good!

"I Want You" - Prinzhorn Dance School

This sparse, post-reverse-psuedo-über-meta-whateva-punk duo takes The XX out of the bed and onto some dirty New York alley. Who wouldn't want to hear they're wanted sans pretense?

"Beautiful Life" - JJ

JJ take way more drugs than a touring funk band and melt hip-hop down into beachy aural goo.

"Seaqz" - Mouse on Mars

Vastly under-appreciated bleepbloops don't need no dubstep gimmicks to fray your wires. Just when you're getting bored, the track blooms with glittery jazz hands. Never doubt their commitment to Sparkle Motion.
