In a landmark, if tentative, victory for LGBT rights, federal judge Virginia Phillips has issued a worldwide injunction stopping enforcement of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, ending the military’s 17-year-old ban on openly gay troops.
Don't whip out the rainbow Mission Accomplished banner just yet, though. The Department of Justice could still stall the decision despite being urged in a letter by 21 senators encouraging them not to appeal the vote.
The ultimate irony in this repeal/appeal dance may not be that this perhaps-deciding DADT case was brought to court by the Log Cabin Republicans, but that the Obama administration has a chance to take a stand by doing absolutely nothing.
