Jenni Lee and the P

By Kate X Messer, May 12, 2009, 1:48pm, Qmmunity

A few different friends sent me the Facebook link to Fox 7's Jenni Lee's page, outraged at her comment response to her own comment on the Fox television TV show The Amazing Race: "I just really didn't want that mom who raised a pansy son team to win."

Pansy? Really?

Now, I do not fully know the context of this, as I do not watch this show. But apparently Jenni Lee has some strong opinions about how moms should raise their sons. In checking her Fox 7 bio, I'm not finding anything about her being a mom herself.

I'm a mom, and I gotta tell you, words like this sting… and even kill. And when our kids – the kids we are raising to be strong men and women – come to us and report other kids' use of slurs du jour like this, we tell them to ignore assholes who choose to express their own desperate need to feel superior by belittling others.

I'm a queer American, and I find Jenni's implication that some kid's masculinity or lack thereof should be a factor in his ability (or lack thereof) to win a stupid TV game show to be distressing, beyond insensitive, and pretty fucked up. "Pansy" is not a word you throw around, even if it's under the guise of objectifying a TV character. And if I'm not mistaken, Amazing Race is a "reality show." I assume that there is nothing intentionally camp about this character. He is a real person. And so is his mom. Go ahead, Jenni: Cry, "P.C."

Jenni's latest FB comment is: "Jenni Lee is so tired after sweating and covering an officer involved shooting."

Perhaps they should send her to the Texas Lege, where HB 1323 Mark Strama's "Anti-Bullying Bill" is being tossed around on the House floor.

By the way, there's a form on this webpage outlining how you can help.

Jenni's thoughtless name-calling goes beyond simple stupidity. It is cruel, especially in the face of recent stories of Texas teens targeted by verbal bullying.

Jenni: Kids kill themselves and get killed over this sort of crap. Is 'pansy' the word you truly wish to use? Also, you posted this on MOTHER'S DAY?!!?! Shame on you.

And on top of all this, we gotta wonder what some of her Facebook pals think of this: Deb? Abe? Tyler? Wanna weigh in?

We expect a public retraction, not just on Facebook, but on Fox 7's newscast and their webpage. Sorry, guys, that's just not cool.
