Queer Comedian Smackdown

Both Adelina Anthony and Margaret Cho in one weekend? Surely this is some form of sign of the gaypocalypse?

Margaret Cho and Adelina Anthony in one weekend! How about in one ring?? God, we wish. Would that be a hot match or what?

No, these lovely ladies of comedy will not be duking it out. They won't even be in the same city. But both of these comic genius babes will be ba-rrrringin' it to Texas this weekend. Adelina Anthony as La Angry Xicana in Austin and Margaret Cho trying out her new material in Houston. And if you live the fabulous life, why choose? You could make an entire weekend of it.

The Glorious Notorious one, Cho herself will be in the Lone Star State this weekend for four appearances slated as Workshop Shows in H-Town at the Laff Stop. The shows will be intimate club dates before launching her national Beautiful tour (of which Austin will hopefully be a part.) "Beautiful is pretty much finished," says Margaret. "So it's not so much a 'workshop,' but there are a lot of new things I'm trying out. I sing in it… to pre-recorded tracks." For the national tour, she'll be bringing out Ian Harvie to open some shows and Liam Sullivan (aka Kelly, as in "Shoes" Kelly!) on others. And how is Ms. Cho feeling about the horserace that is the presidential primaries? "There are too many people running. It's like a reality show, America's Next Top President." Honey, she's just warming up. This weekend's gigs are tonight and tomorrow, Fri.-Sat., Jan 18-19, 8pm & 10:30pm.

Come out right here in Austin and make fun of what we're not supposed to by way of Spanglish humor that flirts with all kinds of cultural taboos from the purported Lesbian Gang Epidemic (The Pink Mafia!) to queered religious icons to the semi-sacred courtship that happens only among queer womyn of color.

Trust us, if you missed last year's squatting-room-only "Sex & Tortillas" show at the Victory Grill (I keep wanting to call it "Sex With Tortillas"…), DO NOT MISS La Angry Xicana. Adelina is blowing up all over the country. Here's a chance to see this hot Texas mama in her element, with friends. Adelina Anthony is Amaxing. Really. Sat., Jan. 19, 7:30pm. Center for Mexican American Cultural Arts, 600 River edit, 472-2001. $10. You can email: lorenzo@allgo.org.
