The open enrollment period for Affordable Care Act health insurance takes place Nov. 1 through Dec. 15. Texas leads the nation as one of the most uninsured states, Rep. Lloyd Doggett and community members are encouraging people to apply by mid-December to see coverage as soon as the new year.
The opportunity to sign up for coverage comes months after thousands of Texans lost access to Medicaid in March when pandemic-era continuous enrollment ended. The result of further eligibility revaluations left many women, children, and young adults without access to health insurance. Of the thousands of Texans who lost medicaid coverage in March, many were kicked off for failing to respond to renewable packet requests within the 30-day period provided by the state.
Coverage options available through Texas’ ACA Marketplace vary depending on income and family status, but all plans will be available for consideration through the Texas Health Insurance Consumer Guide and online at www.healthcare.gov.
Also tomorrow, a press conference hosted by Doggett will be open to the public to mark the start of the open enrollment period and provide information regarding available bilingual resources and fee waivers. Doggett will be joined by Walter Moreau of Foundation Communities and Council Member Vanessa Fuentes. Kelsi Creek of Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) will also attend the event. While HAAM is not a private insurance carrier, they offer help in paying for coverage through the HAAM Premium Assistance Program, but applicants have to apply for help during the Open Enrollment period before December 15.
The press conference will be hosted tomorrow at Foundation Communities Prosper Center located on 2900 S. I-35 Frontage Rd. at 10am.
