Has COVID-19 killed the snow day?

Snowfall like the kind we saw Sunday would normally result in school cancellations. But since COVID-19 forced a pivot to virtual learning, it seems school can go on just fine no matter the weather. This evening, AISD announced that school will be conducted tomorrow entirely remotely. No in-person instruction, no buses running.

Here's the AISD announcement in full:

To ensure the safety of all our students and staff, all Austin ISD classes will be 100 percent remote, Monday, Jan. 11.

No students will report to campus and buses will not run to transport students. WiFi service will be offered on a one-hour delay from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. See our WiFi bus map for service locations.

We will continue to monitor conditions.

For the most up-to-date information, please visit the district's website or follow us on social media.

The AISD community is also encouraged to refer to local news and public safety organizations' social media for weather-specific updates.

While the wintry precipitation is behind us, the National Weather Service cautions that as temperatures drop near or below freezing, "[s]ome locations may see some slick spots on roadways late tonight ... This would be most likely to occur on bridges or overpasses."
