The Frank Erwin Center announced Thursday morning that future events at the arena would be postponed indefinitely in response to COVID-19. “After discussion with University officials and leadership at the Erwin Center we believe it’s in the best interest of everyone involved to proceed with an abundance of caution.” said UT Vice President and Athletics Director Chris Del Conte in a press release. Along with all University of Texas-sponsored events, the postponements will effect big shows including tonight's Chris Stapleton show, Sturgill Simpson, Michael Bublé, and more – depending on how long the arena remains closed. Athletic eventshave also been canceled. This announcement comes on the heels of the shuttering of South by Southwest last week and the World Health Organization’s declaration on Wednesday that the COVID-19 outbreak is officially a pandemic. – Asa Canty
The Cactus Cafe has also cancelled all upcoming shows until further notice. This isn't surprising since the UT-owned venue will be seeing the students leave for Spring Break. Many universities across the country are opting to cancel residential classes and replace them with some manner of virtual instruction.
Speaking of spring break, the university announced that it will be adding an extra week for the annual excuse to party (although we imagine those plans are changing too). Students will return on March 30 unless another announcement is made between now and then. – James Renovitch
The United Soccer League announced that they have suspended the 2020 season for at least 30 days. Locally, that means no Austin Bold games at Circuit of the Americas for that time.
