Listen: Media Roundtable With Journos From KUT, The Texas Observer, & the Chron

Talking shop on this week's The Austin Chronicle Show

This week on The Austin Chronicle Show, we celebrate our "Best of Austin" issue with a lively conversation about the state of media with three "BOA" winners who represent some of the finest media shops in town – KUT, The Texas Observer, and The Austin Chronicle.

Debbie Hiott and Andrea Valdez both made big splashes this year as they took over the reins at local press institutions, earning them the shared award of “Best Media Power Moves.” After nearly thirty years in print media at the Austin American-Statesman, Hiott shifted to radio in early 2019 when she was named KUT and KUTX general manager. And Valdez, previously editor of and, assumed editorship at investigative journalism powerhouse The Texas Observer just this summer. Finally, a familiar name to Austin Chronicle readers rounded out our panel – Sarah Marloff, winner (second year running!) of the Readers Poll award for Best Journalist.

On a personal note, it was such a pleasure to sit with these talented journalists for 30 minutes to discuss our shared experiences in this industry. The half-hour flew by.

And on housekeeping note: If the lure of “Best of Austin” and its nearly 300 awards celebrating the best people, places, and so on in Austin isn’t enough of a draw for you, this week’s issue also boasts a reader survey. We want to hear from you – what you like, what you don’t like, what needs improvement, all of it.

Host: Kim Jones. Guests: Debbie Hiott, Sarah Marloff, and Andrea Valdez. Engineer: Evan Hearn. Theme music: Kevin Curtin and Jonas Wilson.
