, June 20, 2018, 2:18pm, Newsdesk

The Association of Alternative Newsmedia announced today the finalists for the 2018 AAN Awards. Selected from a field of nearly 700 entries submitted by 55 alt-weeklies across the U.S. and Canada, the short list includes nominations for The Austin Chronicle for excellence in cover design and blogging.

Art director Jason Stout, recognized for his outstanding work on the covers below, is one of four finalists in the Cover Design category (circulation 40,000 & over). Also recognized in the nomination are Mike Reddy, who illustrated the Chronicle’s Drinks Issue cover, and Devaki Knowles, who photographed the cover of our Pets Issue. Stout previously won first place at the 2016 AAN Awards for his cover design.

Staff writer Kevin Curtin received recognition for his breaking news blog coverage of the Austin music scene, in particular these five posts: “Guitarist Shot After a Show Friday,” “Days Numbered for Threadgill’s WHQ,” "Margaret Moser, 1954-2017,” “Disneyland on LSD With A Giant Dog,” and “Sound on Sound Fest Canceled." Curtin was previously an AAN finalist in 2016 for his weekly column, “Playback.”

Additionally, Austin resident Jen Sorensen, whose Jen Sorensen Comics is syndicated nationally and in The Austin Chronicle, was nominated in this year’s Cartoon category.

The 2018 AAN Awards winners will be announced this July at the organization’s annual conference, held this year in San Diego.
