South by Southwest Goes to Washington

By Tucker Whatley, September 2, 2016, 3:00pm, Newsdesk

South by Southwest is a cultural behemoth that refuses to stop growing, taking over more of Austin, extending its tendrils to new subjects like fashion and education. Soon, the borders of Austin will not be enough to contain it, as the megafestival turns its colonizing eye toward our nation’s capital.

On Monday, Oct. 3, the White House (the big one, in Washington, D.C.) will be hosting South by South Lawn, a one-day cultural festival inspired and co-produced by South by Southwest. The Interactive portion will feature panels and booths by entrepreneurs and tech companies. Film will consist of the Third Annual White House Student Film Festival, featuring shorts produced by kids in grades K-12. Music, of course, will boast performances by well-known and up-and-coming artists.

Attendance to the event is being granted based on nominations, so if you know someone who deserves to join the crowd of movers, shakers, and life-changers, be sure to submit a nomination before Sept. 10. Who knows – before you know it, you or someone you know could be hobnobbing with Barry or Michelle. Or at least a midlevel White House staffer.
