7:25pm: Austin ISD voters have decided to turn this second round into a nail biter in two races. In what could turn out to be a remarkable upset in District 6, long-time education advocate and PR consultant Paul Saldana is only 62 votes ahead of former Ann Richards Leadership Academy for Young Women teacher Kate Mason-Murphy (50.83% to 49.87%). That's a real surprise, since Mason Murphy has fought a zero-expenditure campaign. There's not much more comfort for UT department head Edmund. T Gordon in District 1, who is only 94 votes ahead of Austin Stone Community Church Minister David "D" Thompson (51.4% to 48.6%). That race, to replace exiting trustee Cheryl Bradley, remains highly volatile: Thompson has faced criticism for his connections to charter groups, but he has mounted an aggressive ground game over the last couple of weeks, while Gordon has never seemed like a natural campaigner.
However, one race seems fairly settled. In the At-Large Position 9 race, AISD District Advisory Council member Kendall Pace is romping ahead of UT program director Hillary Procknow, 64.84% to 35.16%.
Across in the Austin Community College Place 2 race, ACC Foundation board member Gigi Edwards Bryant is running comfortably ahead of construction entrepreneur and ACC employee union favorite Jade Chang Sheppard, 54% to 46%. Those numbers only include Travis County, so if Sheppard can pull off a minor miracle in Williamson, Hays, Bastrop, Caldwell, and Lee counties, she may still have an outside shot. – Richard Whittaker
