The Road to 10-1: District 8

By Nina Hernandez, September 29, 2014, 9:17am, Newsdesk

Tonight at 7pm, candidates vying for the brand new District 8 seat have the chance to make their cases at the Alamo Drafthouse Slaughter (5701 Slaughter Ln.).

Five candidates go head to head. Ed Scruggs and Eliza May come from the left: The former founded Circle C Democrats, and the latter has been involved in Austin politics for years. Darrell Pierce (who ran against Sheryl Cole for Place 2 in 2006) prefers to run as a pragmatist. On the right, voters have a choice between the moderate, engineer Becky Bray, and the spending hawk, Ellen Troxclair, chief of staff to Republican Rep. Jason Isaac.

District 8 claims the southwest swath of town, more than its fair share of traffic hot spots (the Y at Oak Hill, Brodie Lane, and Mopac), and the largest constituency of homeowners in the city, who want property tax relief now. After years of feeling like Downtown didn't care about their problems, residents will finally have a voice to shape the Council.
