House District 50 Run Off Hit by Cold

Travis County announces change to voting locations

House District 50 Run Off Hit by Cold

It's election day in House District 50, but there's a big glitch. Since the cold weather has closed so many school campuses that Travis County Elections Division depends upon for voting locations, voters are being asked to use different ballot boxes today.

In a statement, Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir announced that, because of closures in Austin, Elgin, and Manor ISDs, voting locations on their campuses will not open. However, all other locations will be open: Importantly, eligible voters will be able to use any location. DeBeauvoir said, "Our primary goal is to ensure all polling places are open but we must follow school campus schedules."

The election is the final stage in the special election between Democrat Celia Israel and Republican Mike VanDeWalle to complete the unexpired term of former state rep Mark Strama who stepped down last year to run Google Fiber's Austin division.

UPDATE 11:59am Travis County has also clarified that, even though the Texas Secretary of State is closed today, that will not impact counting or reporting tonight. However, there will be a delay in the announcement of the official results.
