Animal welfare advocates are asking Austinites concerned about the proposed Austin Aquarium to converge on the North Austin site of the as-yet-unfinished (and unpermitted) facility for a rally on Saturday afternoon.
According to a press release, members of Action for Animals and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals will lead a rally outside the proposed site of the Austin Aquarium at 13530 North Highway 183 (an old Lacks Furniture site) on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 12:30pm, to call on public officials to refuse to issue any permits to aquarium owners Ammon and Vince Covino whose business dealings in several states have raised serious concerns about their ability to run a legal and safe aquarium operation here.
"Vince and Ammon Covino aren't following federal, state or local laws, so we have every reason to believe they won't follow the law when they open," rally spokesperson Lisa Aitala said. "We don't want them in Austin and we are urging city officials to not grant them any permits to build or open in our town."
