Travis County Judge Sam Biscoe today released the names of 32 candidates who have applied for the interim appointment to the Precinct 2 County Commissioner seat. Incumbent Sarah Eckhardt is stepping down to run for county judge. Biscoe is leaving office when his term ends in December 2014.
The list of hopefuls includes Bruce Todd, a former Austin mayor and ex Pct. 2 commissioner, former Pct. 2 Commissioner Karen Sonleitner, former Council Member Brigid Shea, who has also filed initial paperwork to run for the seat; former City Council candidate Margot Clarke, attorney and city Water and Wastewater Commissioner Sarah Faust, accountability watchdog Richard Viktorin, and attorney Jeb Boyt, who serves on the board of Alliance for Public Transportation.
Biscoe, who will make the selection, said his preference is to appoint someone who's well versed in county government and doesn't intend to campaign for the seat. Competition is already shaping up for both the county judge's seat and the Pct. 2 contest. Eckhardt's main primary opponent is former Travis County Democratic Party Chair Andy Brown, who will announce his candidacy June 4. Brown recently passed the torch to new Dem Party Chair Jan Soifer.
