Missing the Point on Election Fraud

By Lee Nichols, January 24, 2011, 4:43pm, Newsdesk

The Texas Civil Rights Project today criticized Gov. Perry and the Legislature for making Voter ID an "emergency" priority. TCRP director Jim Harrington brings up the usual points about disenfranchisement of minorities, but also brings up an even better one: Voter fraud is a really ineffective way to tip an election. Insider fraud is the real danger.

"Gov. Perry and the Legislature could better spend their time trying to fix the problem of paperless electronic voting systems (DREs) in which there is no verified paper receipt of how someone has voted. Those systems not only have created huge egregious mistakes in past Texas elections, but are totally and easily susceptible to electronic fraud of a magnitude far greater than anything we've ever seen in history."

In other words: Why go to the trouble to organize hundreds or thousands of people to go to the ballot box and vote illegally (which Republicans would have you believe is happening) when it would be so much easier to just flip a switch or plant a malicious software code in a voting machine?
