When the days get shorter and the nights grow colder, life gets even tougher for Austin's homeless population.

Austin's House the Homeless has a couple events this weekend to call attention to those living on the street, and do something about it.

This weekend marks House the Homeless' 18th memorial service for homeless that died on Austin's streets - Sunday, Nov. 14, 6:58 a.m. at Auditorium Shores. “City Council Member Laura Morrison will be our keynote speaker. Council Member Sheryl Cole will lead us in prayer and Council Member Randi Shade and Chris Riley will be in attendance. "The ever lovely Sara Hickman will raise her voice in song," says HTH president Richard Troxell, whom this blog caught up with not too long ago. “Colleen Troxell, my daughter, will host the service. There will be song, prayer, fellowship, food, coffee, and cocoa. The plaque, Tree of Remembrance, and new bench that comprise the Homeless Memorial, are on Lady Bird Lake at South First and Riverside Drive. It is located just 75 yards east of the Stevie Ray Vaughn Statue. Additional parking at Run Tex is available.”

Along with memorializing the fallen, the event has a second purpose: it serves as a kickoff for HTH's annual thermal underwear drive. Check back at their website next week for information on how to contribute – but suffice to say, a $10 set of thermal undies can make a tremendous difference in a person's life.
