As if low ridership did not already plague Capital Metro's MetroRail Red Line, now Mother Nature is working against them as well. The commuter rail tracks were severely damaged by the flooding last night from Tropical Storm Hermine, forcing the cancellation of all service today.
Officials said service will resume tomorrow morning , but only between Lakeline Station and Downtown. MetroRail customers in Leander are being advised to take express bus routes 983, 986, and 987. Riders who need to travel between Leander and Lakeline stations are advised to board 987.
Cap Metro Chief Operating Officer Elaine Timbes said that in a worst-case scenario, rail service to Leander may not return until Monday, but the agency is still assessing the damage and will update the public as soon as possible. Customers are advised to check the Cap Metro website or the MetroRail Twitter feed.
Timbes said she did not yet have a cost estimate for repairs – a concern for an agency that is severely cash-strapped right now.
The agency has posted pictures of the damage on its Facebook page.
