Austin's Citizen Review Panel will begin its analysis of the internal investigation into the shooting death of Nathaniel Sanders II after a special-called meeting on Aug. 18.
City Police Monitor Cliff Brown will present the investigation -- transfered to his office by Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo this week -- to the panel next Tuesday at 6pm at City Hall. The meeting will open with a brief public comment period before adjourning into executive session.
After reviewing the APD internal affairs investigation, which will likely take at least several weeks, the CRP may decide to accept the investigation (and its findings), or it may call for additional investigation by the APD or by an outside independent investigator. The panel may also make recommendations for policy changes, or recommend specific a specific discipline for Officer Leonardo Quintana.
On May 11, Quintana shot and killed 18-year-old Sanders in the parking lot of the Walnut Creek apartments. Last week a Travis County grand jury declined to indict Quintana on any criminal charges related to the killing.
