Save the Puppies!

By Jordan Smith, June 29, 2009, 2:23pm, Newsdesk

The Austin Humane Society is looking for volunteers to join its foster family program.

Officials with AHS say the shelter has received a whopping 482 requests since May 1 to take in animals for foster care, but, because of a shortage of volunteer families, has only been able to answer 289 of those requests.

The foster program uses volunteer caretakers for dogs and cats that are either too young or too sick to live in the North Austin shelter – many of the animals in need of foster care are litters of kittens or puppies with their mothers.

Foster families care for their charges for the short term – from two weeks to two months – during which time AHS provides training, medical care, and support.
