Dems Zero in on Voter ID Author

In pushing his voter ID bill, Republican Sen. Troy Fraser is waving the 2005 Carter-Baker report on election reform, which called for voter ID. The “Carter” is former President Jimmy Carter, which Fraser thought would be great ammo against the Democrats, who uniformly oppose voter ID. But Austin's Kirk Watson pointed out that Carter and former Secretary of State James Baker were referring to a federal, uniform ID that would send IDs to all citizens.

Fraser also praised Georgia’s voter ID law as a successful model. Eliot Shapleigh just punched back with this quote from a New York Times editorial written by Carter and Baker:

Since we presented our work to the president and Congress, some have overlooked almost all of the report to focus on a single proposal – a requirement that voters have driver's licenses or government-issued photo ID's. Worse, they have unfairly described our recommendation.
Georgia … just started demanding that voters have a state-issued photo ID, even though obtaining one can be too costly or difficult for poor Georgians. We consider Georgia's law discriminatory.
