Braille Is for Diners

State agency and students bring braille menus to 38 eateries around Austin, more to follow

Good news for blind and visually impaired diners around Austin: The Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services and students at the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center are providing Braille menus for eateries around the city.

Broken up into four teams, the 60 students spent seven weeks selecting restaurants, translating and copy-editing their menus, embossing them, and then sending them out. The majority so far are in north-central Austin but include high-end bistros, chain eateries, local institutions, and even bar food. "Many Braille readers from across the country can benefit from this project as they travel to and from Austin," said CCRC adaptive skills instructor Jamie Sibson.

So far, Braille menus have been provided to 38 eateries around the city, with a further 17 still to take delivery. Other restaurants who would like to have their menus translated into Braille can contact Jamie Sibson at 377-0937 for more info.
