The Austin City Council today, April 19, 2007, approved a new contract with KAZI Radio to continue broadcasts of weekly Council meetings on the community radio station. KAZI (88.7 FM) has aired Austin City Council meetings for almost a decade.

“In a community that prides itself on open government, KAZI’s radio broadcasts of City Council meetings offer Austinites another avenue to keep up with decisions that impact the entire community,” Council Member Sheryl Cole said.

Under the contract, KAZI will provide radio broadcasts of all regularly scheduled Council meetings. Coverage will begin at noon with Citizen Communications and continue through final meeting adjournment. The station may broadcast music or other activities during executive sessions or meeting breaks.

“As a community and education radio station, KAZI is excited that we are being given the opportunity to expand our relationship with the City of Austin and to provide additional news coverage to the citizens of Austin,” said David Burrell, Chair of Austin Community Radio Inc. “With the current renovations and expansions that are under way at the station due to our continued growth, KAZI is now ready and equipped to expand the services offered under our contract with the City of Austin.”

KAZI is the oldest community station in Austin. The station is considered a strong force in the Austin broadcast community with a unique mix of music (including soul, hip-hop, jazz, gospel, blues, reggae, zydeco), talk, community information and news.

The radio broadcasts of City Council meetings offer those without cable television or Internet access a simple alternative for accessing meetings. City Council meetings are aired on City of Austin government access Channel 6 or accessible via the City of Austin’s Web site at www.cityofaustin.org.
