NORML: Americans Support Pot Decrim

By Jordan Smith, March 23, 2007, 1:40pm, Newsdesk

According to a new Zogby poll, it looks like the majority of Americans actually agree with the 35-year-old conclusions of the famed Shafer Commission (see post below): That is, a majority of Americans actually agree that pot should be decriminalized.

That’s right, the new poll, commissioned by the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws reveals that 49% of Americans favor pot decrim. Interestingly, while more than 50% of those between the ages of 30 and 64 say they would support such a measure, only 45% of those under 30, and 43% of people over 65, said they would favor decrim. The national poll of 1,078 likely voters revealed that 51% of whites and 49% of African Americans support eliminating criminal penalties associated with personal use and possession, while just 26% of Hispanics said they’d support such a measure.
