Austin Bashing Bills Update

By Wells Dunbar, March 6, 2007, 10:56am, Newsdesk

Every session, the Lege sends our fair city little love notes. Well, more like a deranged stalker leaving blood-penned lunatic ravings, but mox nix. So how's that going?

Ever the Lege's whipping boy, two bills have been filed that would roll back the city's hate-it-or-love-it McMansion ordinance. Seguin Republican Rep. Eddie Kuempel has filed House Bill 1732 and HB 1736, which, retroactive to the beginning of 2006, would effectively gut the ordinance. HB 1732 covers home appearance and floor-to-area ratio (basically saying municipalities have a right to address neither), while HB 1736 ensures cities can't dictate limits on the percentage of a lot used for a home. They're both languishing in the Cryptkeeper's, err, Anna Mowery's Land & Resource Management.

More paeans to the People's Republic later in the week.
