SXSW Music Review: Terminal Mind
Don’t call it a comeback. Don’t even label it a reunion. Only frontman/leader Steve Marsh remains of this golden era ATX punk trio.

ACL Review: Parker Millsap
Was an unseasonably hot Saturday afternoon at Zilker Park compounded by thousands descending on the verdant grounds and expelling carbon dioxide? Certainly, it felt a lot more like August than October. Factor in a shit-hot set at the Tito’s tent by Americana wunderkind Parker Millsap, and it felt like the Fourth of July.

ACL Review: Ryan Adams
“Hey, you! Dude with the glasses,” Americana icon Ryan Adams hollered mid-set on Friday. “Are you havin’ fun? Are you rockin’ out? Then stop takin’ fuckin’ flash photos! I have Ménière’s disease [an inner ear condition that could eventually claim his hearing], and flash messes me up! Seriously, if you haven’t got the photo now, you never will! Give it up!”

ACL Review: Lukas Nelson
Friday’s afternoon crowd on the ACL Fest Miller Lite stage: one T-shirt commemorated Van Halen’s 2007 tour. Another, the late Jerry Garcia. One cheeky punter sashayed forward in familiar red, braided pigtails, facial scruff, and a bandana knotted around his head. The parody of his old man now seems quaint and out of place. Lukas Nelson is firmly his own man.

SXSW Music Live: The Sandinistas
“Hi, we’re the Sandinistas,” grinned singer/guitarist Dan Hagerty at the 20 people gathered before the punk-pop trio two songs into their SXSW showcase at Javelina on Friday night. “We’re from South Wales in the UK. If you don’t know where that is,” he added, tongue firmly in cheek, “that’s where Tom Jones is from.”

SXSW Music Live: Spoon Nite 2
Much, much easier getting into the Main on Wednesday night for the second of Spoon’s three nights celebrating their new Matador Records release Hot Thoughts. The crowd was sparse as Austin’s Quin Galavis took the stage shrouded in dry ice and angry red lighting.

“Let me offer you some important advice,” offered a clearly loose Tommy Stinson upon greeting yours truly on Wednesday evening, minutes before taking the stage at the Hotel Vegas patio. “Never play any club that doesn’t stock your brand of booze.”

SXSW Music Live: Spoon Nite 1
By the time Tuesday evening’s line to get into the Main – rebranded Eno’s through Thursday in honor of its former incarnation as Emo’s and Spoon drummer Jim Eno – allowed entry, Austin’s Bright Light Social Hour were neck-deep in the lysergic emanations of the Beatles’ Tibetan Book of the Dead rewrite, “Tomorrow Never Knows.”

ACL Review: Willie Nelson
Someone let Texas’ most famous musical byproduct down. Audience conversations should never be louder than “On the Road Again.” Yet, following a “Thank you, Willie” video from a cross section of ACL 2016 acts, an audience-pumping intro by Matthew McConaughey, and the state flag unfurling as a backdrop on “Whiskey River,” the damned P.A. needed upping.
