SXSW 2023 Announces Thao, Armani White, Blondshell, and Otoboke Beaver

Among 191 acts on the festival’s first artist list

Could it already be that time of year? With cooler temps arrives the first South by Southwest artist list for the 2023 conference.

Booked for March 13-18, SXSW Music leads with 191 artists including Japanese “poetry rapper” Haru Nemuri, euphoric UK space rockers the Orielles, and the mononymous Thao – title of veteran Oakland songwriter Thao Nguyen, formerly of Thao & the Get Down Stay Down. Philly streaming megawatt Armani White claims catchy 2022 hit "BILLIE EILISH.” (“Bitch, I'm stylish / Glock tucked, big T-shirt, Billie Eilish.”)

Kyoto firebrand Otoboke Beaver (which you could preview this Tuesday at Mohawk with Peelander Z) and alternative K-pop collective Balming Tiger reprise past impactful SXSW visits, the latter notably collaborating with BTS‘ RM on this year’s single “Sexy Nukim.” The Chronicle recently enjoyed memorably dark, alt-poet savvy of Blondshell at ACL Fest, which the L.A. songwriter called her first-ever big-stage show. Blues-influenced Matador troupe Algiers, carefree garage name Ron Gallo, and Melbourne post-punk Fire Records select RVG all uphold rock urgency.

As for the excellent pre-gaming method of Audiotree Live tapings, try Godcaster’s freaky Philadelphia-sourced experimentalism or Dallas-launched Ariel & the Culture’s playful vision of alternative R&B. Longest band name awards go to British stoner rockers Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, and Providence act Baby; Baby: Explores the Reasons Why that Gum is Still on the Sidewalk.

Alongside Houston standard Fat Tony, Austin-sourced announced participants are: Being Dead, Big Bill, Chief Cleopatra, Colin Gilmore, Die Spitz, Fragile Rock, fuvk, Jad Fair and the Placebos, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, San Saba County, TC Superstar, Tribe Mafia, and locally-launched, New York-relocated Keeled Scales act Why Bonnie.
