Second SXSW Lineup Installment Adds Over 300 Acts

Revving up for the fest, March 11–20, South by Southwest adds 323 acts to the music lineup. The second artist list leads with Brazilian futurist folk trio Tuyo, popular Scottish soul-pop singer Joesef, and evocative indie music figure Shamir, toting incoming eighth studio album Heterosexuality.

Some familiar rock names also make the cut: NYC indie trio Sunflower Bean, Atlanta garage troupe the Black Lips, and Scottish post-punk revivalists We Were Promised Jetpacks. For any others who may have recently rewatched The Devil Wears Prada as part of a Stanley Tucci marathon (guilty), there’s KT Tunstall with her soundtracking 2005 hit “Suddenly I See.”

Also headed this way: Circuit des Yeux, the emotionally haunting project of experimental force Haley Fohr, continuing to stun with the grand and pained compositions on this year’s Matador Records-issued album -io.

Noted Austin-based lyricist/producer Scuare provides a local link for exociety, a new touring collaboration with rappers Rav, Kill Bill: The Rapper, and Airospace. The lineup also reveals the COVID-era relocation of Cambridge, MA-launched Sub Pop duo Sweeping Promises to Austin.

Vocal-looping Richmond pop force Angélica Garcia stunned at a Levitation last month ahead of Chicano Batman. The alternative sonic space also leaves room for Los Angeles easy listening oddity Jerry Paper, accomplished Philadephia experimentalist Moor Mother, sharp spoken-word Irish punk Sinead O'Brien, and formerly Austin-based country shaper Jess Williamson.

Meanwhile, the March mega-conference adds new London psychedelic cumbia quartet Los Bitchos, Commando – a yet-to-be-officially unveiled eight piece LGBTQ supergroup ostensibly doing a new flip on Nu Metal that was leaked-on, then deleted-on Tribe 8 member Lynn Breedlove’s social media, and Marina Herlop: an experimental vocalist, producer, and pianist from Spain whose pre-album releases are at once challenging and inviting – just look at this recent video for “miu” where she sings next to a calf being born (hey, at least she’s nice enough to help clean off the placenta!).

On the viral TikTok circuit, Dallas musician A-Wall took off for gushy 2019 “Loverboy,” typically preceded by the audio clip "Yo bro, who got you smiling like that?” Houston native Tisakorean also found dance rap success on the app. On the vintage circuit, the Dream Syndicate join as harbingers of Los Angeles’ Eighties Paisley Underground scene.
