SXSW Music Rolls Out Second Artist List

By Kevin Curtin, November 13, 2019, 10:00am, Earache!

Following yesterday’s announcement that Pink Floyd mastermind Roger Waters will make a keynote speaker appearance at the 2020 conference, South by Southwest rolls out another 210 performers, including influential UK art punks Wire, big personality Memphis rapper Jucee Froot, and Sigur Rós-affiliated multi-disciplinary musician Alex Somers.

Music week, running March 16-22, taps former Hop Along force Frances Quinlan, old-timey folk scholar Dom Flemons, slowcore upstarts Milly, Philly punks Control Top, and Major Lazer member Walshy Fire. Also on deck are lysergic sludge punks Weeping Icon, Anti Records-signed folk-pop songwriter Boy Scouts, Detroit bummer-pop songster Anna Burch, lovable indie trio Dehd, extremely chill L.A. shoegaze project Launder, and fellow post-punk-influenced Angelenos Automatic, who recently signed with Stones Throw and appeared locally at last weekend's Levitation.

We can also thank Los Angeles for the least genuine offering on the entire list: a Runaways-esque girl-group contrivance Charli XCX put together for upcoming Netflix series I’m With the Band: Nasty Cherry.

Once again, these early SXSW lists stack lots of international intrigue, including: the artsy, energetic pop and hard-hitting Eastern European beats of Ukraine’s Alina Pash, the lush indie pop of Montreal’s Bodywash, Jakarta, Indonesia’s impressive indie favorites Reality Club, and, from Japan with love, Otoboke Beaver’s bubble-gum grindcore.

Also from the land of the rising sun, Dos Monos have been getting some love stateside from fans of experimental hip-hop, while fun-loving Parisians Faire look to break into the U.S. scene with the wild and eclectic style of rock they call “Gaule wave.” Also coming from foreign shores are Charlatans singer Tim Burgess, Zambian smooth pop stylist Salma Sky, and the loose London groove-and-thought collective Steam Down.

Lovably idiosyncratic guitar-n-drums duo Being Dead, profound songwriter David Ramirez, and San Marcos-founded rap conglomerate Pnthn highlight the local bum rush, which ropes in Atash, Darkbird, Fragile Rock, Grivo, Jeff Lofton, Moving Panoramas, Mr. Kitty, My Education, Pastel Ghost, Pleasure Venom, Shy Beast, Superfónicos, Whitney Rose, William Harries Graham, and World Music Unleashed.
