ACL Live Review: Monsieur Periné

“We wanna bring you some smooth tropical energy because we want to forget winter is coming,” announced Catalina García of Monsieur Periné to a small sea of jacketed and winter scoot-booted revelers on Friday at the Tito’s tent.

Nary a festican withstood the call to shimmy while Garcia’s Bogotá-based crew churned out high-energy Latin roots-pop during the mid-afternoon hour.

Launching with “Encanto Tropical,” title track from the album produced by Calle 13’s Eduardo Cabra last year, the fantastic Colombian septet charmed the chill out from under Austin’s first cold front of the fall, which visited unheard of temperatures – 46 degrees – on ACL Fest’s second weekend.

García’s lead proved flawless in golden fringe and a floor-length butterfly frock. Her band brought the searing sun with their guitars, horns, drums, and perfectly timed choreography for each song, leading even the audience to comply with the invitation to shimmy to the left, shimmy to the right, back, front, “y menea” (wiggle) for “Suin Romanticon” from the group’s first album, Hecho a Mano.

Behind Spanish, French, and Portuguese, the Latin-Grammy-winning group worked through material from three albums in 50 minutes. García ran into the crowd to sing with them for Encanto Tropical’s “Bailar Contigo,” a song co-written by one of the writers of urban mega-hit “Despacito.”

Sweet and bright, from wedding singers to touring bards of equatorial rhythm, Monsieur commanded a tent of pale and bronzed tones alike, directing all to crouch for a countdown and then jump with joy during “Tu M’as Promis.” For “Llevame” from Encanto Tropical, García introduced a political perspective:

“We are very proud to bring our music from Latin America here ... We are immigrants ... This song is inspired by freedom because we are not going to be silent anymore. We are going to stand up every day for the ones who cannot.”
