“Corre y se va.” Time for a round of Lotería! In the video for “Una Vuelta Más,” Austin synth/cumbia act Como Las Movies immerses itself in the lively, bingo-like game that originated in the 15th century and remains a staple town square fixture throughout Texas and greater Latin America.
Everything commences innocently enough, the quartet shooting tequila as they plunk down beans and coins on their respective game cards. When the players begin drinking from a mysterious brown jug, the vibe changes – as evidenced by bandleader Nelson Valente Aguilar getting touchy feely with his bandmate’s face. Soon, they come to embody the characters found in a Lotería deck.
There’s the vest-wearing drunk (El Borracho), the dandy gentlemen (El Catrin), the skull (La Calavera), the melon (El Melon), and even a terrifying appearance by the devil – El Diablo. Asked what’s in the brown jug, Aguilar laughs.
“We believe it’s either rice milk con un poco de Sprite, tacuache pee, or liquid vice-penance in a bottle for the indulgent player of Lotería,” he quips.
The video, a collaboration with multi-media artists Tango Tron filmed at Mosaic Sound Collective, pans circularly around a table, backdropped by the scrolling Latin folk art of Jeremy Ward. The dreamily mellow Spanish-language track, “Una Vuelta Más,” which means “one more turn,” pulls from Como Las Movies’ solid 2018 EP Nuevo Wave. The locals return to the studio this summer to track a follow-up.
